Hope all you weekend party animals are enjoying your Sunday Funday. Here is a new Sunday Staff Pick from our very own Director of Programming (and gentleman extraordinaire), Charlie Hunter. There’s a little bit of something for everyone here. Swing by the 35 Denton Spotify for a comprehensive list of all the artists announced thus far.
Lowell – The Bells
This is one of the acts I’m most looking forward to seeing at the fest. I can’t get over this song. Do yourself a favor and check out the video. I’ve been forcing it on everybody I talk to and they’ve all loved it. The simple instrumentation…the hook…her voice…it’s all killer.
Marilyn Manson – Third Day of a Seven Day Binge
I usually catch a lot of shit for sticking by this band over the years, but I don’t care. I’m really excited for this album to come out. The more ethereal sound of this track makes me curious to see what direction the record is going. I’m sure I’ll love it. I always do.
The Spring Standards – Wildfire Forest / Only Skin
I first heard this band back when I was helping with booking the fest in 2010. They had to cancel due to a scheduling issue, so they sent me an apology and an advance copy of their upcoming record. We’ve since become good friends and they crash at my place whenever they come through to play. They are the kindest people in the world and insanely talented. This is my all time favorite live band. If you ever get a chance to see them, jump at it. I couldn’t choose just one track, so here’s a couple of my favorites from their live album.
The Lees of Memory – One Wave in the Sea
I’m a huge Superdrag fan, so when I heard that John Davis and Brandon Fisher had a new band and upcoming album, I flipped. It’s easily one of the best records of 2014. This track exemplifies some of the huge sounds that they create. Amazing stuff.
Royal Blood – Out of the Black
My hetero lifemate, Dallas Guill, turned me on to this track. I was blown away. There’s not enough straightforward rock nowadays. Unfortunately, they are going to be on tour in Europe during the fest this year. Oh well, maybe next time.
July Talk – Paper Girl
This band is proof that we need to pay more attention to what’s going on in Canada. Their vocals couldn’t be more different or more perfect together. He’s got that Tom Waits growl down. I’m really hoping they tour down this way, because if they don’t, I’m gonna hafta update my passport.
