Words by Christen Monyihan If the one-in-one-out pre-sale show featuring Astronautalis was any indication, Oaktopia is positioned to blow some Denton minds when it descends on downtown in less than two weeks from today. From Friday, September 25 through Saturday the 27th, the festival, in its junior year, will feature over 70 local acts in addition to major headliners, such as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Minus the Bear. Since its inception in 2013, the festival has grown to include a second main stage and will be spread out across 10 venues, including Harvest House, Dan’s Silverleaf, Andy’s, […]

Words by Sara Button | Image by Shaina Sheaff Earlier this summer Brent Best took the stage of Dan’s Silverleaf to celebrate his first ever solo album, “Your Dog, Champ.” The show sold out and the newly remodeled venue was soon packed to capacity, with a sea of sweaty, music loving bodies as far as the eye could see. Local songwriter Daniel Markham opened for the revered Best, boasting a crowd of passionate fans singing along to nearly every word. During Best’s set I realized two things: this music is extremely heart-rending and it was almost unbearably hot inside the […]

Words by Christopher Swain | Image by Shaina Sheaff “How many of you have seen me perform before?” With hands pressing to the sky, loud whistles and cheers echo throughout the packed crowd hugging the front the stage. “How many of you are here because your boyfriend or girlfriend dragged you here to see me?” A grin appears while acknowledging those who have supported him throughout his musical career. “I’m Astronautalis… Hey Denton… You know…  I’ve never lived in Denton, but I’ve been arrested here.” Oaktopia’s second presale event of the year went off without a hitch. Most of the evening […]

Energy teemed around the downtown Denton Square as the first series of bands and performers readied themselves for flocks of festival attendees. Staff writer Violet Ravotti was at Banter to check out the Singing Bowl Lady, Sandee Conroy, with Jeffery Barnes and it was an excellent way to warm up her senses and prepare for the sea of music 35 Denton weekend had to offer. The performance was very trance-like and the vibrations strongly resonated, we could feel the currents shifting in the air as Conroy spun the roller tip around the quartz crystal singing bowls. It was very compelling and the […]
